Annual Hanukkah show Next Tuesday December 27th!!!

Hey y'all!

Oy-Dog here. Today, December 20th and next Tuesday December 27th are both "Muzikal Jewz" holiday shows. Today is the "Chrismukkah" show. We'll be spinnin' some great hanukkah tunes (since tonight is the first night of hanukkah!!!) as well as some Jewish Christmas tunes (you'll just have to listen to understand this), and there are some fun surprises in store for a few loyal, lucky listeners. Next Tuesday is the 4th annual Hanukkah show. Some of my favorite hanukkah tunes will be played, and there are even more surprises in store!

Traditionally, these have been some of the most popular and fun "Muzikal Jewz" shows of the year, so you don't want to miss them. If you're not in the holiday spirit yet, they'll surely get you there!

Elizabeth Torres and Scott Stobbe Live on "Muzikal Jewz," December 13th

Anyhow, I'd like to announce that Elizabeth Torres and Scott Stobbe will be doing a live in-studio performance on the "Muzikal Jewz" show on Tuesday, December 13th. They will also be playing LIVE tonight at the Backstage Lounge in Santa Cruz 11/30, from 7:30-9:30 pm. Tickets are VERY affordable. Check out the description below:

Weaving Balkan and klezmer tunes with gypsy jazz and swing, Elizabeth Torres and Scott Stobbe’s eclectic musical offering will cast a spell over the Backstage Lounge come Wednesday (tonight!). Through his work with local avant-rock outfit Zdrastvootie, and gypsy jazz troupe The Underscore Orkestra, Stobbe has developed a refined command over the guitar, which he carefully plucks alongside Torres’ soaring soprano sax to create dream-like soundscapes. They will also be performing live on ‘muzikal jewz’ in two weeks on December 13th as well.

Tikva Records Store in Downtown SF in December!

There is a cool record store/exhibit happening in the Mission district of SF for the entire month of December. The shop celebrates Jewish music released on Tikva records, a very prominent Jewish American record label in the 20th Century. See below for further exciting info!

Tikva records store is located in downtown san francisco on the corner of mission and bernal. More like a ‘jewish record shop exhibit,’ it will be in town for the entire month of December. Vintage Jewish records line the walls and it is reminiscent of the ‘jews on vinyl’ exhibit by Josh Kuhn that was featured at the SF Jewish Museum and other places last year. Records such as johnny Mathis’ “Kol Nidre” and Fred Katz’s trippy ‘Folk Songs for far out folks” line the walls. One record in particular has been recently released by the idehlson society for Jewish music preservation, and will be featured there as well. It is called ‘songs for the Jewish American jet set” and features various tracks from tikva records, a Jewish American record label the was in business from 1950-73, and was known as the “Jewish Motown.” Anyhow, there are several events taking place at this jewish record store/art exhibit, which I’ll tell you about briefly.

on December 1st: Official opening party for the store.

December 2nd: Los Lobos band member, and only Jewish member, Steve Berlin will original-score an silent Russian film.

December 7th: Indie Jewish rock band Fool’s Gold will do a live in-store performance to celebrate the release of their latest album, “Leave No Trace.”

December 8th: The Burton Sisters, a jewish duo, will do a live performance for the second time in the last five decades.

December 10th: Members of Dengue Fever will perform in-store.

Jeremiah Lockwood of the Sway Machinery will play at some point as well.

There are plenty more events planned as well as channukah approaches, so stay tuned for that.

Remembering Amy Winehouse

I have been a huge fan of Amy Winehouse since I first became aware of her in 2006. I remember being taken by her interesting contralto, which sounded a bit like a mystical fusion of Lauryn Hill, Billie Holiday and Bob Dylan. Once I started 'Muzikal Jewz,' I played Amy from time-to-time on the show.
I was shocked and saddened to learn of her death. I always had a feeling somewhere in my heart that she would break free from the oppressive chains of addiction and end up being this great soul diva who would continue to give us fresh, original songs about the pains of life and love well into her senior years.
I think that Amy follows in a long tradition of Jewish performers who have broken the mold and created a superstardom that was unlike anything ever witnessed before. Like Streisand, Fanny Brice, Sophie Tucker, Al Jolson and Bob Dylan, she was completely original. They all had their own unique personal style and charisma with enough unbridled talent for a dozen people, as well as incomparable singing voices that may have borrowed a bit from African American culture, but somehow maintained a unique Jewish identity as well. And Winehouse, like Dylan, was an extremely talented and fascinatingly original songwriter who was able to articulate the collective voice of her generation.
I know that Amy will not be forgotten. Her voice will live on forever, and her spirit is now free from the demons that haunted her in her lifetime.

Goodbye JDUB records...Jewish music will never be the same :(

I can't believe it, but JDUB records has announced that they have decided to call it quits. For nearly a decade, JDUB has been the place to go to to discover some of the most interesting and eclectic new Jewish music around. They are responsible for getting Matisyahu's career off the ground, and while they may be best known for that, to me they are so much more.
I started doing "Musical Jews" three years ago, and at the time I really didn't know exactly what my show was going to sound like. I wanted it to represent Jewish identity through music over the past century. I wanted it to sound Jewish, so that when somebody tuned in at any time during the broadcast, they would know exactly what show they were listening to and that it represented a distinct ethnic identity and heritage through music. JDUB's family of musicians have been instrumental over the years in helping me to achieve that sound. Artists such as Socalled, Golem!, Deleon, The Sway Machinery, the Macaroons, Balkan Beat Box and yes, even Matisyahu, brought a depth and excitement to my show that has made it what it is today (which is something that I'm proud of). Basically, I think that it is safe to say that I wouldn't have a show if I hadn't discovered the musicians on the JDUB store website. I am eternally in their debt.
JDUB records created an identity for their young Jewish followers through their blog, merchandise, concerts/events and most of all, the musical artists on their label. They made many feel as if they were a part of something special. They helped make "Jewish" a cool and good thing today. They fostered pride and hipness within the community. The founders and contributors of JDUB should not hang their heads today; they should feel forever proud for the indelible mark that they have left on the Jewish community and the musical community at large.
I am at a loss...I can say to you honestly that as long as I continue to do my show, it will not be the same without JDUB there to keep releasing great Jewish music for me to play. And while my show may suffer from this loss, it inspires me to continue playing all the best, fun eclectic new Jewish music and Jewish artists across time and borders that I can find.
Goodbye for now, JDUB. Perhaps someday you will return, perhaps in a new form, to keep promoting Jewish visibility through music in your own amazing way. Until then, shalom and thanks for doing so many amazing things in the past nine years.

"Musical Jews" 3 year anniversary special

Shalom Y'all!

Hard to believe it, but "Musical Jews" will be celebrating its 3 year anniversary this coming Thursday. For my very first show of the new KZSC spring schedule, I will be spinning 3 of everything on the show, whether it be 3 Barbra Streisand songs or 3 songs about Jewish cowboys. It should be a fun event. I want to thank everyone who has shown their love and support for the show over the years, and even those who have shown their anger and dislike toward it. All of your responses have helped me to make this show what it is today, and I am pretty proud of it. Hopefully, there will be a "Musical Jews" show on kzsc for another 3 years! If anyone even reads this thing anymore (not sure), feel free to respond before Thursday with some "3" themes to add to my anniversary playlist for the April 14th show. And don't forget, the "Musical Jews" show for April 21st will be the annual Passover extravaganza!

Upcoming show specials--Mitch Levitsky & Holocaust remembrance show

Hey Y'all, Shalom!

Oy-Dog here. I know that I hardly ever write in this thing, but my life is extremely complicated, as I'm sure most of yours are, so you know how it iz!!!! Anyhow, Happy new year, and stay tuned for a coupe of upcoming show specials over the next few weeks. Also, kzsc's new winter programming schedule starts next week, Jan. 17th (MLK day!) "Musical Jews" will still be on Thursdays from 8:30-10:30, so not to worry, kids! Anyhow here are two special shows coming up in January!

January 20th: "Musical Jews" celebrates famous Jewish/Yiddish radio personality MITCH LEVITSKY!!!!
Levitsky was a legend in the Jewish radio business. He was featured on NPR's "Yiddish radio project" and was an advertising legend on WEVD radio. One of his most famous accounts was for Joe & Paul's clothiers on New York's Lower East Side! I am very pleased to report that his son, Burt Levitsky, a Santa Cruz resident and local painter/artist, will be my featured guest for this show! We will be discussing his father and the amazing fact that the Barry Sisters performed at his Bar Mitzvah! Amazing! We will also be playing music from the era and songs featured from a radio special that Levitsky did back in the day!

January 27th: I will be doing a Holocaust remembrance show, featuring songs inspired by the tragic events of the Holocaust. January 27th is the official Holocaust memorial day, as it is believed to be the day that the prisoners were freed from the camps by Russian and/or American soldiers following WW II.

Also of interest: There is an exhibit at the Jewish museum in San Francisco right now featuring art that was owned by Jews that was looted by the Nazis during the Holocaust. The featured art has been recovered and returned ti its rightful owners, and is just an amazing fraction of the invaluable works that were taken by the Nazis during WW II. Word has it that admission to the museum is free on MLK day (Jan. 17th!)

Thanks to all my loyal listeners, old and new, for tuning in each week. In typical wandering Jew fashion, the show and I are moving to yet another day and time slot for the summer months. "Musical Jews" will now be on Thursdays from 8:30-10:30pm until September...please make a note of it!

Also, next Thursday will be the first new summer show, and to celebrate, we will be having the annual Jewish beach party celebration!!!!! All of your favorite Jewish beach tunes will be spun by yours truly, to usher in the new summer season at kzsc! You don't want to miss it!

Hey All!

Oy-Dog here saying a great big THANK YOU to all who donated to kzsc during the pledge drive on my show! We had a great amount of phone calls and raised almost as much on my show as we did last spring, so I am very thankful. And someone got the electric menorah for their generous pledge!!!!

hey! The show is now on from 6-8a.m. on Saturdays instead of 6-9. There was a mix-up with the new fall schedule...

As for the comment about why the show is on Saturdays from the june post (which I just happened to see only recently), which is a weekly Jewish holiday, I have two things to say. First of all, I am not a religious Jew (I'm not even considered a Jew in the eyes of religious Judaism, as my mother is not Jewish), and so I don't have a problem doing a show on Saturdays. Secondly, I do feel that my show appeals more to secular Jews and non-Jews than religious Jews. Having said that, I would like to make this show reachable to all people, regardless of their beliefs or cultural background, so I am going to try not to air my show on Saturdays, starting with the winter schedule in January. I would like to have a show on another day as well because I have always been conflicted over playing music that is performed by artists who are religious Jews. Out of respect for them, and for the religious Jewish listening public, I am going to try to have my show moved to another day by the beginning of next year. Again, this is entirely up to the kzsc PRC, as they create the schedule, but I will try to appeal to them with my argument. In the meantime, wake up early on Saturdays, and listening to my show (if it doesn't conflict with your personal beliefs.)!!!!!!

I hope that you have had an awesome summer and a fantastic Jewish New year! Me? Well, I did the show all summer, and I got in a car accident, and I read tons of books and wrote a paper in preparation for grad school, which I just started...

KZSC has a new fall schedule that begins tomorrow, if I'm not mistaken. 'Musical Jews' will still be on the exact same time and day, however. I will be focusing on Jewish studies for my thesis here at UCSC, and I am looking forward to finding out even more about the history of Jewish music, so that I can share my findings with you all out there! Anyhow, keep on keepin' on, and let's have a great new year!

Don't forget, the kzsc pledge drive is in a couple of weeks, and I'm counting on all my faithful listeners to show your love and support for 'Musical Jews' by calling in and making a pledge during the show. It will mean a lot to the show and Jewish Music-- it will be just like saying, "hey, I like Jewish music, and I think that it should be given the attention that it deserves! It has a rich, diverse history that is an important part of the national, and international, landscape. Oh, and it is damn entertaining too!" See? I just said it for you. MUSIC TO CHECK OUT:

"Love is the Answer"-Barbra Streisand. Barbra's latest is a collaboration with the jazz great Diana Krall. Jazz standards with Barbra's unique vocal delivery. At 67, she's still going strong! Check out the deluxe edition, which features both the quartet version, which Krall produced with her own band, as well as the orchestral version, which is what happens when Barbra steps in and has final say on the project. I much prefer the stripped down Krall quartet version to Barbra's overblown orchestral schmaltz. It allows a much more intimate space between Barbra, the band and the audience. Note to Barbra: Less is more, less is more!

"Building the Better Bomb"- Rabbi Darkside. This Jewish freestyle rapper from New York is off the hizzay!!!! His rhymes are educated, daring, provocative, splendid, creative, relevant, fresh and--is that enough adjectives? I think so, for now. I am really into this album, if you couldn't tell. Check out 2x2 and the Better Bomb (which features samples of Allan Ginsberg rappin' poetic!)

"Surprise Hotel"- Fool's Gold. I've been playing this song over and over and over...I was pleasantly surprised by this single, which is an amazing blend of african rhythms and hebrew singing from an indie rock band from Los Angeles! Imagine a Jewish version of Talking Heads, if you will.

Soulico- "Exotic on the Speaker". This is the first mainstream u.s. release from this Tel Aviv DJ Crew. Much of this is a compilation of singles that they have released in the past few years, but some of it is new material with collaborations from Rye Rye (M.I.A.'s protege') on the first single and title track, as well as many other well-known artists from around the globe. Good, exciting beats with an international flava (hence the word 'exotic')!

Oy-dog here to remind everyone that KZSC's spring pledge drive will begin this thursday, and we will be trying to raise money for the station on 'Musical Jews' on Saturday, March 7th from 6-9am, 88.1fm, kzsc. I know that times are tough right now for everyone, but if you dig the show, and you like what you hear every saturday morning, it would mean a lot to me for you to donate $10, or $20 to show your support for 'Musical Jews' and KZSC. It would also show the powers that be at KZSC that you really want this show to stay on the air and that you feel that it is an important part of the programming schedule at the station, as they do crdit each show with the money that is raised during their broadcasting day/time. hey everyone, oy-dog here...well I just wanted to reccomend some great new music for you:

What's hot:

1. The barry sisters: Our Way--so, so good! seventies top-forty hits sung in Yiddish by the singing jewish sister act who by the time this album was released, had traded in their swing dance skirts and heels for polyester bell bottoms -- but they still rocked it!!! Wassup, wassup, you know what i'm sayin'...

2. Jamie Saft, "Black Shabbis"-- what can I say -- Jewish death metal at its finest--I never thought that I'd be able to say that sentence--but I often dreamed of it. Saft has created a death-metal album of songs that remind the listener that anti-semitism is alive and well around the world, and we cannot ignore or forget it. I can't stop listening to this one!!! Go buy it right now! I command you! In the name of jewish death metal and all other things holy!!!

3. Golem! 'Citizen Boris' --fantastic gypsy-klezmer rock from one of the best bands out there! 'tuchesses and nenes' is a song for the ages! this is a must-have release, coming february 10th.

4. the sway machinery--'hidden melodies revealed' --another fantastic album by this jewish rock super-group, featuring members of the yeah yeah yeahs, antibalas and balkan beat box. Great, rockin' jewish soundzzz!!!

the Great Zeigfeld--a rare movie performance from Fanny Brice is the highlight in this one: not to be missed!

Defiance: daniel craig leads a terrific cast in this film about jewish soldiers.

It has been wayyyy too long since I've written in this puppy....the show WAS going to be moved to 8-10am on saturdays, but now it has changed to 6-9am saturdays...hey, I just do what the radio station tells me! As long as they keep me on the air so that I can bring you all the best jewish music and jewish artists...across time and across borders!!! I did some great stuff since the last blog, but I'll have to fill you in some other time. please stay tuned to next week's show, october 25th...we will be doing a halloween special, jewish style, as well as our fall fundraiser for the station. Your support is very much appreciated, so c'mon...help us out! If you pledge during my show, it would mean much to me!!! What if Jerusalem had been re-formed in Canada instead of the middle east 60 years ago? Who killed the Yiddish chess-playing genius in the hotel room that detective Meyer Landsman stays at? this book will keep you turning the pages this summer as you lounge around the beach!!!!! p.s.--I've heard that the Coen Brothers are turning this into their next movie!!!!!!!!

HaDag Nachash--Live!!!!---this live album from the Jerusalem superstars is the perfect soundtrack for cruising around the boulevard on these hot summer nights, or on your way to the beach!!!! All of their best tracks are featured in a live performance captured on CD. A standout for me is their smokin' live version of "California", a song featured in "You Don't Mess With the Zohan." A must-have for HaDag fans, or those who want something fun to listen to this summer.

PEPI GINSBERG--RED--

this is a hot album, man!!! pepi really gets 'into your bones' and stays there!!! she is so unique and original. Her music isn't 'jewish' per se, but I think she is. If you're into alterna-chick music at its best, this is the album for you!!! a must-have album this summer!!!

Those SURFER WETSUIT BOOTIES WITH THE INDIVIDUAL TOES....

if you've seen them, then you know what I mean...everyone seems to be wearing them here in Santa Cruz, from the young to the old. They look like wet-suit shoes, but they have individual toe slots, like those toe-socks, but you can wear them as shoes. I've seem people dining out in them or just running errands in the city. They are hot, hot , hot baby!!!!!!!

EGG CREAM--

That's right, the egg-cream is back. A one-time soda shop favorite makes its return for these hot trendy summer months...there is no egg involved, but it looks like an egg when served. It is soda, chocolate, ice cream...at least I think that's what's in it. Perfect pleasure food for a long, hot summer!!!!

you don't mess with the...?

okay, okay, so I finally saw "you don't mess with the Zohan." Let me start by saying that I've never been a Sandler fan (although I think that his 'hunakkah' song is a classic), so I was a bit dubious going in. The thought of an Israeli james bond-turned hairdresser in NY really appealed to me however...so I'll just say that it had some good moments and some lam moments. I felt like I got suckered into sitting through a brainless, cheap-o, half-assed idea of a movie about half way through. The sex jokes wore thin after a while. I was pleasantly surprised that the Zohan had a big package beneath his underwear, and it was a bit funny when it turned out to be a giant bush of hair that made it look so 'endowed' down there. Lainie Kazan as the horny older jewish mother was amusing at first, but even that bit turned into a one-trick pony. This movie was ultimately filled with so many cliches' and stereotypes that I was bored and actually fell asleep near the end. I do like the message about 'following your heart and dreams', but I feel that it was mired in such banal sit-com goo that I had a hard time seeing it. The fish in the ass was kind of funny (you'll know if you see it), but overall, I give this movie just an "oy" out of a possible "oy-vey-riffic!". Music is good--the israeli band HaDag Nachash is featured prominently, so hopefully they will become even huger international popstars!!!!!! However, so is Mariah Scarey, and I'm not a big Mariah Fan....so I'll just say this movie was not really for me , but it might be for someone else.
